The dream goal would be, have a wall of synths that creates all the sounds you use for a performance at once, all running like an orchestra, all taking individual midi channels and all outputting to the mixer, then play a midi recording in the daw, use the mixer to adjust levels and solo instruments, output mixer to interface and record into daw. Use daw to record midi inputs of your performance so you can replay and mess with the filter, play over top, adjust knobs and such. The DAW sends midi on usb to synth to play, mixer listens, blends sources (synth 2, 3, 4 also playing same midi at same time), or microphones, and passes the audio onto the interface for recording. The deepmind has usb midi, the focusrite is audio over usb, the only thing you need is a mixer. You want to have more capability than you use for now as you'll likely add more gear once you go beyond 1 thing. Otherwise, just get something with the most ports for the less money, like the Scarlett 18i8. If you don't need MIDI coming from outside back into the interface, or only just 1, then you shouldn't need an Merge boxes.ĭo you have Thunderbolt on your PC? I'd absolutely recommend the Presonus Quantum 2626, if you do. I also use 2x Kenton MIDI Merge boxes, but there's reasons. I use a Kenton MIDI Thru to split the MIDI out to each synth/fx rather than daisy chain, again to minimize latency. That way everything has the same delay on the USB. I prefer routing everything over MIDI and then in/out via USB for the interface. I went with a USAMO, but want an ERM Multiclock some day. I found computers to kind of suck at being a clock source, but you can get by on it, or maybe it'll be OK for you. The number of cables seems to grow exponentially even with no mixer. YES! Unless you're performing live or something, it's better, albeit also more expensive, to upgrade your audio interface and avoid yet-another box to adjust and yet more cables with a mixer.
